One Thing You Can Start Doing Now to Instantly Improve Your Marriage…… by Rhett Smith

Freebie! On a Monday? (Cause it is not Friday!)

I found this really great free resource, online today. It is a free book!

“Why do so many young adults (18 to 22) leave the church, and what will it take to bring them back? This important question is examined and duly answered in Essential Church? : reclaiming a generation of dropouts , a follow-up to Thom S. Rainer’s best-selling Simple Church co-written this time with his son, research expert Sam Rainer.”

And the download link is here!

I am excited about reading this book. I just finished UnChristian and think this will carry a similar theme.

Websites I check compusevely (Not everyday)

Besides my emails, Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter profiles:

Most of these websites send me email subscriptions (so I don’t access their web page directly very often but I do read the articles in the emails) sometimes I click on a link in the email that leads me to their site.

Getting online as a parent and letting your kids online

I am not a parent but I have collected some tips and resources that I think would be helpful if I were a parent. I am a youth minister and I want to help parents connect with their teenagers and grow them closer to the Lord.

Stats on how many teenagers are using laptops and spending a lot of wasted time online.

http://www.commonsense.com/internet-safety-guide/ – Internet Safety Guide for Parents:
“Check site histories, set appropriate age filters, and check out the parental controls on your browser. Teach your kids the basics of safe searching (Google has a safe-search setting), and give them a digital code of conduct. Don’t let them figure it all out by themselves. ” Another helpful page: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/parent_tips/commonsense_view/index.php?id=270

According to CPYU.org – Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, we should:

First, we need to find out why our kids are visiting these sites.
Second, we should make sure we are equipping them properly to deal with the types of information they are confronted with both on these sites and in the world. Third, we must foster an environment of trust.
Fourth, we need to model for them what healthy relationships look like
Fifth, our kids must learn the difference between information and advertising.
Sixth, we need to make sure our kids are safe on the Internet.
(I cut the main principles, go to CPYU.org and read the details under the articles section).

– “Rules N Tools” is the page title. I really love this website. It has a lot of good ideas for rules and more tools to help you and your kids figure out social networks and the internet.

Internet-Related Safety Tips for Teens from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

1. Don’t give out personal information about yourself, your family situation, your school, your telephone number, or your address.

2. If you become aware of the sharing, use, or viewing of child pornography online, immediately report this to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.

3. When in chatrooms remember that not everyone may be who they say they are. For example a person who says “she” is a 14-year-old girl from New York may really be a 42-year-old man from California.1

4. If someone harasses you online, says anything inappropriate, or does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, contact your Internet service provider.

5. Know that there are rules many Internet Service Providers (ISP) have about online behavior. If you disobey an ISP’s rules, your ISP may penalize you by disabling your account, and sometimes every account in a household, either temporarily or permanently.

6. Consider volunteering at your local library, school, or Boys & Girls Club to help younger children online. Many schools and nonprofit organizations are in need of people to help set up their computers and Internet capabilities.

7. A friend you meet online may not be the best person to talk to if you are having problems at home, with your friends, or at school – remember the teenage “girl” from New York in Tip number three? If you can’t find an adult in your school, church, club, or neighborhood to talk to, Covenant House is a good place to call at 1-800-999-9999. The people there provide counseling to kids, refer them to local shelters, help them with law enforcement, and can serve as mediators by calling their parents.

8. If you are thinking about running away, a friend from online (remember the 14-year-old girl) may not be the best person to talk to. If there is no adult in your community you can find to talk to, call the National Runaway Switchboard at 1-800-621-4000. Although some of your online friends may seem to really listen to you, the Switchboard will be able to give you honest, useful answers to some of your questions about what to do when you are depressed, abused, or thinking about running away.”

Random Thursday: Man Law!

Today’s random thought/resource is a blog I came across this weekend. I really liked the blog and some the videos on it as well.
The Blog is called MANSPEAK – I am not sure completely what the idea or the start of this blog is because their ABOUT page is not completed but according to the BIOS page, there are 6 young men who contribute to the blog regularly. As I have investigated the blog, the posts are focused on being godly men. They are reformed, believe in evangelism, and offer some great links and resources.
Some of my favorite things about the blog, besides the great posts, are the “Manly men of history” links to other websites ( Charles Spurgeon, Herman Bavinck, John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, Martyn Lloyd-Jones,Thomas Watson)
Edwards, and their comedy page called MAN LAWS.

The Man Laws page is great. These bloggers sit around a table and talk about the most important Manly topics – coffee, tight pants, hugs, leg crossing, diets, and emoticons. I have posted a few videos at the bottom of this post, but go to the MAN LAWS. site to see them all. And subscribe to their blog for manly updates.

Favorite Apologetic/theology websites of late

http://www.alwaysbeready.com/
-This is a neat “field guide” that might help you get information about other faiths and cults. It also could help you share your Christian faith better to people you know who believe in another world view.

This one is one of my favorites. It is geared toward High school and college-aged students. There is infomation from topics ranging from ‘Who is Jesus’ to college life issues and life questions.

This site is highly recognized for tackling all kinds of hot issues in both the political and scientific realms. The site originally was created for the historical and scientifically minded and those who challenged the evidence of Christ’s existence and Christ’s life. Today the site is easy to understand for people of all education levels and branched out to tackle many more
issues including social issues of divorce and homosexuality.

You might be able to figure out what this site is about judging by the title. “Debate, argument, and apologetics contending earnestly for the faith.” It was created by an ex-atheist turned Christian and others helping him!!! There are some pretty good knock-out arguments in here!

This site is also an excellent site to send your atheistic friends and friends who say “I want to believe but there just is not enough or any evidence…” Because the truth is there is tons of
evidence proving God’s existence. They are just not looking for it, they may not want to believe it, and/or they have been hidden from the truth. Today’s media and society do not
want us to beieve in just one way solutions, but this is the only way- The Word of God is the absolute truth.

Answersingenesis.org
This site is fulled with tons of answers to crazy questions ranging from UFOs to Creation to Abortion to Moral Issues to Mutations and more !!!
Probe.org
This one is one of my favorites! So many resources can be found from this site. Not just apologetic truths but so much! There are articles from tons of professors and experts about how our faith relates to our culture, science, politics, sexuality. This site also helps explore different
world religions, cults, theology, philosophy, and even psychology. It probes both historical things along with current day issues.A must go to site for any intellectual mind.

This site I highly recommend for you Bible stomppers who really love and appreciate theology and always want to be right about how the Word is viewed and understood. This site is
excellent resource for someone researching theology and want to know
what the Word of God says and all sides of the issue!

Veritas.org

Veritas means Truth. The Veritas Forum is an opportunity for entire university communities to explore and discuss life’s hardest questions. The Veritas Forum is an effort to engage Universities in its most fundamental purpose: the pursuit of knowledge. The Veritas website offers years and years worth of free material in helping you and deal with those most difficult questions. Evidence for the answers of these questions comes from both Scripture and the pursuit of knowledge.

http://www.gotquestions.org/
This website I have found interesting. Some issues it is great, but on other issues i have found this website biased and/or lacking to in the way they answer certain questions.

I do have a shout-out for my friends in my apartment desiringgod.org – Anything reformed and John Piper related is usually a good choice.
